Puffins and Penguins Weekly Newsletter 1st February 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week in Puffins and Penguins we have continued our work on ‘People Who Help Us’.

We welcomed a volunteer speaker from the registered charity, Devon Air Ambulance Trust, who talked about the incredible work they do. In 2017 it cost £6.4 million to run the service, they rely on the support of the community. The children were fascinated by some of the rescue stories and it even inspired some future paramedics and pilots. They were very interested in the use of night vision goggles but at a cost of around £18,000 he was unable to bring them with him.

The following day, Paramedic Mr James Wenman from South Western Ambulance Service came to visit us. The children had the opportunity to ask questions and climb aboard an ambulance. Mr Wenman put some children in a vacuum splint, and he turned on the blue lights and sirens. We rehearsed a 999 emergency call enabling the children to understand when and how to make the call. Thank you to Mr Wenman for a fun and informative visit.

To celebrate the work we have done on ‘People Who Help Us’, on Wednesday 6th February we                     invite the children to dress up as someone from the community who helps us. This could be a Doctor, Firefighter, Paramedic, Refuse Collector, Army, Navy, Air Force, Crossing Patrol, Vet etc.

In Maths we have been adding and subtracting. We have been challenging ourselves with number problems and working with our talk partner. Next week, we will explore doubling and halving.

Home learning

  • Ask your child to order some items from around the house in order of height or length – take a photo or write down how they did and add them to their red book.
  • Try some simple subtraction problems e.g If I have 15 marbles and 5 go down the marble run how many will I have left? etc
  • Write a thank you letter to one of our recent ‘People Who Help Us’ visitors.
