Puffins and Penguins Weekly Newsletter, 28th June 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a beautiful sunny week, the children enjoyed exploring the woodland area. They worked together demonstrating great teamwork and responsibility to create log dens. We are so lucky to have this space of natural beauty for the children to think creatively and problem solve together.

Caterpillar News! On Monday, the children came in to school to find one of butterflies had emerged from the chrysalis. By the end of the day, several more appeared and we were lucky enough to witness it happening. The butterfly climbed out of the split chrysalis with soft crumpled wings. After only a few minutes the butterfly's wings were dry and it was flying around the net. The children were fascinated by the butterfly tongue which begins as two long strands that fuse together to form a tube-like tongue. The butterfly will use this tube to sip nectar. On Friday afternoon we took the butterflies into the woodland area and released them into the wild to continue the life cycle.

We have been busy practising for Sports Day on Tuesday next week. This is such a fun and memorable event we hope you can join us to support the children. We have sent PE kits home to be washed so the children can come into school on Tuesday wearing their full PE kit all day. Puffins and Penguins races will start at 2pm. However, you are welcome to come early and have a picnic on the field with your child from 12.00 – 12.30pm. We will bring the children to meet you on the field so they can sit with you. Please make sure your child brings a packed lunch on Sports Day unless you have pre-ordered lunch for your child from the kitchen – lunches cannot be ordered on the day and do not forget to bring your own food and picnic rug. If you are unable to meet your child for lunch please let us know and they can sit with us on the field with their friends. After lunch, the children will go back into class to get ready for their races. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full PE kit with a school cardigan or jumper in case it is chilly, and they will need a hat and water bottle.

For three days next week (Wednesday – Friday) Puffins and Penguins will join the rest of the school for Multicultural days. The children will be split into our four houses Meadfoot, Livermead, Broadsands and Goodrington. This will be their house for the rest of their school journey. Each house has a mix of children from every year group, it is a fantastic opportunity for children to share experiences. This year each house will be learning about a different religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism or Islam. The children will take part in a variety of activities, watch video clips, create models and research information. Religious Education has an important place in our curriculum. It provides a safe space for children to develop their understanding of people, cultures and faiths of the world in which they live.

We look forward to sharing this with you next week.
