Foundation Stage Weekly Newsletter
Puffins and Penguins Weekly Newsletter, 1st November 2019
Dear Parents and Carers,
This half term we will be learning about different celebrations. This week we have been learning about Diwali. The children have enjoyed watching video clips, hearing the story of Rama and Sita, making rangoli patterns and creating their own diva pots. Today we went to our first celebration assembly. We enjoyed listening to all the other children talk about their achievements.
The new sounds for this week are: z, ch, qu, x and ng. We have almost completed set one sounds, the children have been working very hard. Please continue to use the workbook to practice letter formation, if you require another booklet please let us know.
In Maths, we have been partitioning the number 7. The children have been using counters and other objects to explore how we can make 7 (i.e 5 and 2 then 4 and 3). Please continue to help your child count reliably from 0-20 and backwards. Also talk about numbers in the environment, this will help with their recognition.
This half term the children will be introduced to our new dinosaur School Value ‘Responsibility Rex’.
‘I am Responsibility Rex. I am always in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. I am very good at looking after our environment and take care of all the equipment and people in our school. I am responsible for my own learning and enjoy reaching my targets. I like challenges and I am proud about the things I do in order to achieve them.’
In the woods, we collected twigs ready for a small campfire on Monday. We will be talking about how to stay safe on bonfire night. Today we talked about the Rugby World Cup and in P.E, we practised our rugby skills, passing the ball and scoring tries.

Share a Story Session
We would like to invite you into the classroom on Tuesday 5th November at 2.45pm to share a story with your child. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their vocabulary and understanding of the world. We will have a selection of books for you to share and enjoy. Please enter through the KS1 playground and please let us know if you are unable to attend. We look forward to seeing you.
Book Bus
We are very excited that a Book Bus from The Book People will be visiting the school on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th November. You can buy books before and after school between 8.30am and 4.30pm. We do not want children bringing money into school, you need to make your purchase with your child. The more books our families purchase, the more free books will be donated to school from The Book People.
Home Learning Options:
- Talk about the things you celebrate with your family.
- Stick a photo in your red book of you celebrating with your family. We will talk about the photo with the whole class.
- Draw a picture in your red book to represent number seven.
- Bake something yummy with a grown up. Use the language of more/less and talk about what is happening.
- Share a favourite story together
Dates to remember – more information will be given nearer the time
