Unit 3 Autumn 1 Newsletter

Year 3 & 4 Newsletter, Autumn 1

Home Learning and Supporting the Curriculum at home

We have attached a selection of Knowledge Organisers for you to use to support your child’s learning at home. These set out clearly what we expect children to learn and remember in that subject. Please use these at home to reinforce and help embed your child’s learning.

Please encourage your child to log into TT Rockstars as often as possible. This will help, alongside the dedicated sessions we do in school, to boost their fluency at times table recall.

You will also receive log ins for Sumdog and Spelling Shed. Your child’s weekly spelling list will be set on Spelling Shed for them to practice. Please encourage this in time for our weekly test on a Friday.

Sports Day

We are delighted to invite you all to our Sports Day on Thursday 30th September. This will be our first event on our new Astro Turf Sportsfield. Below are the times for each age group:

Swimming

We are cleaning and heating up our school pool. We will be ready to start swimming from the week commencing 13th September.

Our swimming day is Wednesday. Remember to bring a named one piece swimming costume or trunks, goggles, a named towel and a swimming cap if your child has hair below their shoulders.

School Value

This half term, we are learning about Respect, and how respect for others helps builds the warm, welcoming, and calm atmosphere in school.

British Value

This half term, in our Class Assemblies, we are learning about the British Value of Democracy by electing our School Council, to help our school become even better.

Our Curriculum

Children in Key Stage 1 and 2 will enjoy a long and short enquiry each half term.

Long Enquiries

A long enquiry typically lasts five weeks and allows us to teach a subject, such as history, in depth. Clear expectations of what will be learned, is shared with parents and pupils through a Knowledge Organiser.  At the end of the work, we plan to use Enquiry Quizzes on our iPads to see how much each child has remembered.

Short Enquiries

A short enquiry can last anything from 1 to 3 days and adds breadth to our curriculum.

In our first Learning Enquiry this term we are learning about the countries of Scandinavia and comparing them to the UK, and the Knowledge Organiser is attached. Please use it to reinforce and repeat the learning at home.

Please note that the Knowledge Organisers have been sent by email, and are also available on the Newsletters webpage.

Maths

We are focusing on place value to 10, 100 and 1000. Children will use manipulatives to develop their understanding of the relationship between these numbers and will understand how we can use number bonds to 10 to solve problems to 100 and 1000. Children will be developing their fluency of multiplication tables.

Literacy

Children will be writing both a short fiction story and a non-fiction piece about a Scandinavian country of their choice. The books we are focusing on are ‘Daphne and the donuts’ in the Book of Hopes, and ‘Rainforest Rough Guide’ by Paul Mason.
