Home Learning and Supporting the Curriculum at home

We have attached a selection of Knowledge Organisers, for you to use to support your child’s learning at home. These set out clearly what we expect children to learn and remember in that subject. Please use these at home to reinforce and help embed your child’s learning.

Home learning—Full details of our home learning projects are on Teams, please see your child’s home school link book for the login. Here are some suggestions:

A family trip to the Newton Abbot museum where you will find lots of interesting facts and artefacts about Brunel and the Industrial Revolution.  Find out about seaside holidays in the past. Make a factfile about Isambard Kingdom Brunel.     Research the invention of the steam train and present it to your class.  Visit the Broadsands viaduct and paint a picture of it.

Please support your child’s learning by reading with them at least three times a week, they will bring home a RWI book or a ZPD book, and a library book to share.

Woodland camp & PE

Children are to come to school in their PE kit on PE days. Snowy and Little Owls PE day is Monday, Tawny Owls is Tuesday. 

Our woodland camp day is Monday.

Rock up and Read

Over the next few weeks, we would like to invite you to our new ‘Rock up and Read’ sessions. This will be an opportunity for you to come into the classroom to share the love of reading with your child. The children really enjoy reading for pleasure, and they would be delighted to share the experience with you. Dates below.

Maths

In Year 1 we are learning about measurement. We start by looking at measuring mass, then we will learn about finding the volume and capacity of containers, and finally we will learn about measuring time.  We finish the half term by learning about the place value of numbers to 100.

The year 2s will be focusing on fractions, finding halves, quarters and thirds before moving on to learning to tell the time to 5 minutes. Please support your child by looking at analogue clocks and practicing reading the time.

School Value

This half term, we are learning about creativity. Children will be thinking outside the box to solve problems creatively across all areas of the curriculum.

British Value

This half term, in our Class Assemblies and PSHE lessons, we are learning about the British Value of Tolerance, by understanding about different cultures and accepting the opinions of others.

Our Curriculum- Children in Key Stage 1 and 2 will enjoy a long and short enquiry each half term.

Long Enquiries

A long enquiry typically lasts five weeks and allows us to teach a subject, such as history, in depth. Clear expectations of what will be learned, is shared with parents and pupils through a Knowledge Organiser.  At the end of the work, we plan to use Enquiry Quizzes on our iPads to see how much each child has remembered.

Our first Learning Enquiry this term is History—What was the Industrial Revolution, and what happened in Torbay? The children will be learning about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his part in the industrial revolution and how that affected the development of Torbay. The Knowledge Organiser is attached, please use it to reinforce and repeat the learning at home.

Literacy

Our literacy is linked to a Little People, Big Dreams book about Amelia Earhart. The children will also be writing a biography based on a text about King Charles III.

Later in the half term we will be exploring a non fiction book linked to our Science, planting seeds. The children will write some very detailed instructions using the model text Grow Your Own Lettuce.

As a school we are particularly focusing on improving the children’s handwriting and spelling, and our literacy lessons will be reflecting this.
