History
Through our history curriculum, we strive to inspire pupils to develop lifelong curiosity, to question and understand the world around them, and to make connections of how the past has influenced our present and helped to shape the world we live in today. To achieve this, pupils observe and interpret a wide range of historical evidence, including primary and secondary sources, to deepen their understanding of key figures, significant achievements, and empires throughout history.

Our history curriculum is delivered through an enquiry-based approach which is based on one key overarching question per unit. The enquiry-based approach encourages children’s curiosity and inquisitiveness about life in the past and present. Our history curriculum is designed to give children a knowledge-rich historical understanding which reflects the area in which they live and the people of the present and past that have lived here and had influence on the area. Children will be making connections within the context of ‘achievements’ and ‘empire’, looking at the British Empire, empires around the world and the people past and present that lived within them. In doing this, children will develop their historical vocabulary and raise their own questions within historical enquiries within the wider framework of achievements and empire.
Therefore, we will give our children:
- A sense of belonging for every child in the ever-growing story of Great Britain and in doing so develop a strong understanding of the history of the South West of England and knowledge of notable historical figures and events within their local area.
- A coherent knowledge and understanding of the history of the wider world and its chronology, to inspire their curiosity.
- A skillset that develops schemas in order to enable them to access new learning, recall prior learning and think critically about a range of sources.
Children also explore history-related careers, gaining insights into future opportunities and aligning with our aim of preparing them to be "Ready to Work."
