Wellbeing

At Preston Primary School, we aim to promote mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community. We recognise how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health.

We are committed to delivering a Trauma Informed approach to ensure that all our children develop positive mental health and resilience, enabling them to fully engage in life and learning. Our Relationship Policy drives all of our interactions and we invest in a highly skilled pastoral team, emotional literacy support assistants (ELSA) and our Staff Wellbeing Ambassadors.

We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody's business and that we all have a role to play. We work alongside our families to nurture children’s mental health and well-being.

At our school, we promote a mentally healthy environment through:

  • Promoting our school values and encouraging a sense of belonging
  • Promoting pupil voice and opportunities to participate in decision-making
  • Celebrating academic and non-academic achievements in order to promote self-esteem
  • Providing opportunities to develop a sense of worth through taking responsibility for themselves and others
  • Providing opportunities to reflect
  • Helping children to understand their emotions and feelings better and to feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • Helping children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

Preston’s Mental Health Support Team

We have a Senior Mental Health Lead in school (Miss Pettitt). We have designated trained emotional literacy support assistants (ELSAs) in each unit who lead ELSA sessions and nurture groups for children such as ‘time to talk’ social skills work and 1:1 check ins.

If you have any concerns about how your child is coping or you need any other support from the school, please let us know by contacting the pastoral team or your child’s class teacher.

Staff Wellbeing Ambassadors

As part of our whole School approach to mental health and wellbeing, we have developed a number of strategies and interventions to actively support employees and promote a culture of wellbeing.

One of these initiatives is a group of Staff Wellbeing Ambassadors who are located across various departments within the school.

Our Wellbeing Ambassadors are volunteers from across the school who play a key role in supporting the Senior Leadership Team to achieve our staff wellbeing aspirations.

The purpose of the role is to promote and support our staff wellbeing strategy by raising awareness around health and wellbeing activities and signposting to resources and support services. Our Ambassador’s have a strong awareness of the school’s staff wellbeing strategy, enabling them to support / signpost colleagues to relevant resources.
