Design and Technology
At Preston, Design and Technology is an innovative and practical subject focused on addressing real-world challenges. In our fast-paced world, our DT curriculum encourages creativity, fosters creative thinking, and promotes collaboration, equipping students to become future problem-solvers. Through DT, children gain the skills to adapt to new challenges and seize opportunities in an ever-changing society.

Our Design and Technology curriculum sparks pupils’ curiosity about the evolving world around them. It fosters inquisitive, adaptable problem solvers who apply prior knowledge to new challenges. Through a continuous cycle of Design, Make, and Evaluate, the children learn to produce products, be imaginative, creative, and resilient, as well as learning how to think like a designer, maker and evaluator. They build confidence to take risks and think critically, solving practical problems both individually and in teams. With creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that address real-world needs and challenges, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values.
Across the design and technology curriculum, children will learn about the following areas of design and technology: textiles, cooking and nutrition, structures, mechanical systems and electrical systems, and IT.
Throughout their learning, children explore a diverse range of careers related to being a designer, maker and evaluator. Children will discover how these key individuals have influenced the world around us. By learning about the various careers within design and technology, children gain insight into potential career opportunities for their futures, therefore equipping them with our school aim of ‘Ready to Work’.
