Writing
Our writing curriculum is designed to empower children to become imaginative, engaging, and innovative writers, demonstrating precision, control, and adaptability in their style.

We use Devon Education Services BookWrites to support our writing curriculum, which empowers children to develop their writing skills by exploring and learning from high-quality texts by exceptional authors, covering a diverse range of genres.
This framework provides children with a clear structure, helping them understand authors' choices and intentions while showcasing examples of effective writing. It builds a solid foundation in grammar and punctuation, offering clear goals and outcomes to guide their progress.
Our writing lessons follow a three-part structure designed to immerse children in the writing process and develop their skills systematically:
- Familiarisation: Children engage with the model text as readers, exploring authorial decisions, intentions, and the impact on the audience. They also learn about specific composition, grammar and punctuation features, learning how these are effectively used within the text.
- Practice Write: Teachers and children work together to construct a shared piece of writing, which links to the style of the model text. This collaborative process helps children apply their learning in a supportive environment while refining their understanding of the writing techniques introduced.
- Independent Write: Children independently use their newly acquired knowledge and skills to craft their own writing, inspired by the author of the model text. They make thoughtful writerly decisions and consider the impact of their choices on the reader, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
By integrating writing skills with these rich texts, children learn how their decisions as writers influence readers in different ways. The curriculum follows a logical progression of texts, enabling children to systematically build on prior knowledge and skills. This approach ensures they achieve the intended outcomes with confidence, competence, and a strong sense of purpose as writers.
