Accelerated Reader

We use Accelerated Reader to inspire a love of reading, boost confidence, track progress and get to know our pupils’ reading interests, as children develop their reading comprehension skills.

Accelerated Reader (AR)

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a website/app designed to help children develop a love for reading while improving their reading comprehension skills. It encourages pupils to read independently and allows teachers to see what books pupils are interested in, so they can get to know their reading habits. Accelerated Reader can be accessed both at school and at home.

How Accelerated Reader Works:

In school, pupils from Year 2 and beyond will complete a ‘Star Reader’ test. This gives teachers an appropriate reading range for each child, so when children visit the school library one of the books that they select is within their reading range. Books within the child’s reading range are appropriately challenged.

Once a child has finished their book, they can search the book on the ‘Reading’ section of Accelerated Reader, and they can begin a reading comprehension quiz to check their understanding. AR tracks progress, offering insights for teachers and parents about the number of books read, quiz performance, and growth in reading levels. Children can also read and quiz on books from home or local libraries too – we recommend that the child is able to read the book fluently and is able to talk about what is happening in to book to show comprehension of what they are reading.

Each half-term, your child’s class teacher will set an appropriate reading target. Points can be earned towards your child’s reading target each time they quiz on a book they have passed. They will need to have scored 60% or higher to pass the AR quiz. Children can see how close they are to their reading targets by clicking on ‘Progress’ and then seeing how close the rocket is to the planet. Once the rocket has reached the planet, they have achieved their target! The ‘Progress’ tab also informs children how many points they have earnt and how much longer they have remaining to achieve their reading target. At the end of the half term, we give certificates to every child who reaches their own individual target.

You can support AR at home by encouraging daily reading, discussing books, celebrating achievements, and using tools like AR BookFinder to help your child choose books that interest them.
