Pupil Leadership Groups

Pupil leadership is a great way of empowering children. At Preston we strive for as many opportunities for children to become confident and articulate leaders, who can share their views and apply their leadership skills to real life situations.

At Preston we value the importance of actively teaching our children how to be positive citizens in society. One way we do this is by giving children opportunities to take on leadership roles where they can thrive on being responsible, trustworthy and dedicated individuals. We believe in empowering our pupils to take ownership, develop leadership skills and contribute positively to our school and the wider community.

The aim of our pupil leadership groups is to enable children the chance to have leadership within the school, ensuring that their voices and opinions are heard.

School Council

Democracy is an important British value that we want all the children at Preston to understand. Elections for our School Council take place at the start of each academic year. Candidates can put forward their election speeches and classes elect one councillor from each class from Year 2 to Year 6. Our School Council meetings ensure our children have:

  • A forum to voice their concerns and act upon them
  • Listen to their peers and present them in the meeting
  • A structured opportunity to learn problem-solving skills
  • An opportunity to take an active role in the organisation of the school
  • An opportunity to experience a democratic process
  • To help write an action plan for the year

Eco Committee

Our Eco Committee is a group of children representatives from each class from Year 2 to Year 6. They aim to raise awareness of why it is important to look after our environment and how we as a school can collectively make a positive and lasting impact. They will research and plan environmental and sustainable projects that can be implemented across the school and wider community.

Reading Ambassadors

Our Reading Ambassadors are a group of children representatives from each class from Year 2 to Year 6. Being a Reading Ambassador is all about reading for pleasure and sharing the deep enjoyment of reading a great book. Reading Ambassadors are chosen for their love of reading, their willingness to share this passion with others and enthusiasm to promote reading throughout the school.

Digital Leaders

Our Digital Leaders are the technology ambassadors for our school. They are responsible for supporting our Education Technology offer and how we use it to enhance pupil outcomes. During celebration assembly, our digital leaders take photographs of the children who have received the class cup each week and upload the photo to their Seesaw account for families to see.

House Captains

At Preston, we have four houses, Livermead, Meadfoot, Broadsands and Goodrington. All pupils at Preston belong to one of these houses. Each house is led by two House Captains from Year 6 and are chosen by staff based on being excellent role models for their peers and who demonstrate our six school values in everything they do. House Captains have chosen a local charity for their house to support. After thorough research, the House Captains selected causes that align with our school values and address meaningful issues in our community. Here are the chosen charities:

  • Broadsands House: Therapy Dogs Nationwide – supporting emotional well-being through animal-assisted therapy.
  • Meadfoot House: Torbay Mencap – promoting inclusion and providing essential support for individuals with learning difficulties
  • Goodrington House:  Torbay Salvation Army – helping vulnerable individuals and families in need with food, shelter and support service.
  • Livermead House: Rowcroft Hospice – providing compassionate care for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

The House Captains will lead their Houses in planning potential fundraising events to support these charities throughout the year, making a real difference in the lives of those in need, further promoting our school aim of ‘be a good citizen.’
