Geography
At Preston, we aim to provide children with an excellent Geography curriculum to inspire, challenge and engage children to understand more about the world around them. Our Geography curriculum inspires children to develop a sense of curiosity and fascination about the world and the people in it.

The geography curriculum is delivered through an enquiry-based approach which is based on one key overarching question. The enquiry-based approach encourages children’s curiosity and inquisitiveness about the world around them. Children develop a strong understanding of their local area (Torbay) and the wider world, broadening their horizons and appreciating opportunities beyond Torbay. Throughout the curriculum, children are given opportunities to make comparisons to other localities; care has been taken to choose these locations so that learning remains relevant and purposeful.
At Preston, children progressively develop key disciplinary skills:
- Geographical enquiry: asking questions and using evidence to find answers.
- Map skills: analysing and understanding the world through maps.
- Similarities and differences: comparing areas to understand the world.
- Cause and consequence: geographers know that events can change geographical features.
- Continuity and change: understanding how locations stay the same or change over time.
- Data collection and interpretation: gathering and analysing data to answer questions.
Children also explore geography-related careers, gaining insights into future opportunities and aligning with our aim of preparing them to be "Ready to Work."
