Women in STEM at South Devon College
Unit 4 visit South Devon College to take part in a STEM workshop.

On Friday, a group of children from unit 4 visited South Devon College to take part in a Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) day. They saw many different areas of the college where STEM subjects are taught and saw lots of them in action. The lecturers explained why encouraging more girls into STEM is so important and introduced them to many different careers in STEM. The girls took part in many challenges over the day, using skills from STEM subjects throughout. They completed a project in the afternoon which saw them designing a machine to combat plastic pollution. The staff from the College were impressed by the children’s ideas and were very complimentary of their projects and presentations, a great example of them using our school aim of ‘Love to Learn.’ The girls returned to school very excited to continue their education in STEM and inspired for their future careers. One child said "I really liked the day because we were told about lots of options for jobs and learnt lots about women in STEM. I want to go into photonics because it seems cool, and I like learning about new things. It caught my eye because I've never seen anything like it before."
